How to Wash Cloth Nappies?

Take the stress out of cloth nappy care!

Whether you’re a seasoned pro with cloth nappies or just starting out, figuring out how to wash them can feel a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ve condensed our years of expertise, along with tips from experienced cloth nappy parents, to give you everything you need to know about washing your nappies!

1. Remove solids

Shake any solids directly into the toilet, or use a nappy sprayer to rinse off solid residue. No need to pre-rinse nappies that are only wet with urine.

2. Store or pre-treat

Store the nappies and inserts in a moisture-proof wet bag that you can wash, like our nappy pail. You can also store them in a plastic-lined bin or pre-soak them in a plastic bucket with cold water. It’s best not to let nappies sit unwashed for more than a few days.

3. Pre-wash

It is recommended to run a prewash cycle on your cloth nappies every one to two days in the evening or the following morning.

A pre-wash is a shorter cycle on your washing machine intended to remove
the initial soiling of your nappy. For optimal results, it is advisable
to wash your nappy on a 40-60 degrees , utilising a 30 to 60 minute
cycle.

4. Main-wash

After the prewash cycle, your nappies
should undergo a second wash cycle every three to four days, comprising
the last three or four days' worth of prewashed nappies that have
accumulated.

This is a lengthier cycle, lasting a minimum of two hours, and should be set at a temperature of 40-60 degrees Celsius to guarantee that your nappies are deeply cleaned.

5. Dry

After the main-wash cycle, your nappies
can be hung out to dry. For the extended lifespan of your nappy shells,
it is advisable to line dry them in the shade or on a clothes horse
beneath a fan.

While shells and inserts may be tumble-dried on low heat, utilising a dryer will speed up the wear and tear of your nappies.
